A Guide to Buying an Apartment in Barcelona, Spain

A Guide to Buying an Apartment in Barcelona, Spain

Are you looking for apartments for sale in Barcelona, Spain? Should you consider moving to the Catalan capital? Where does Barcelona rank in the overseas property market in Spain? We discuss this and more in this article.

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in the world; that offers one of the best standards of living that you will get anywhere. It is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, which attracts millions from around the world every year.

Barcelona is very popular with rich, high net worth individuals from a number of emerging nations such as China, Russia, Brazil, and India to name a few. There are also many wealthy buyers from the Middle East who have shown a lot of interest in buying apartments here.

But for those looking to sell apartments in Barcelona, Spain fast should target the usual crowd of Britons and Scandinavians, who remain the biggest buyers of properties in Spain.

It’s easy to see why Barcelona is so popular. It is the home town of Barcelona FC, of course, which is arguably the world’s biggest football club. Some of the greatest footballers in the world – Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta and Neymar play for Barcelona.

But Barcelona is a lot more than that. It is the political centre of Catalonia or the Catalan nation, and is a culturally vibrant place that stands directly in contrast to Madrid, the capital of Spain.  Most people in Barcelona voted for Catalan separatists in the elections held in 2016 and have demanded for a referendum to decide on their independence. Nobody knows how the politics is going to play out, and this certainly represents a risk for those who want to buy a house in Barcelona, Spain in 2017.

Regardless, Barcelona remains as popular as ever with foreign tourists and with those looking for a second home or a holiday home in Spain. It’s a big city with a cooler climate than the rest of Spain.

It’s certainly not as sunny in Barcelona as it is in Costa del Sol or on the Canary Islands. The city is densely populated and has some of the problems that most large cities of this kind have to deal with, such as traffic and pollution.

Barcelona is considered to be one of the most liberal cities in the world with an artistically minded local population. Some of the architecture in Barcelona is decidedly world class.

Barcelona is not as expensive as Madrid, Paris or London, but it is not as cheap as some of the other places in Spain.  However, it’s much better to buy an apartment here compared to renting one, as the rents can be quite prohibitive. Even a simple one-bedroom apartment will fetch a rent of 1,000 Euros/month.

But the crime rate in Barcelona is one of the lowest in Europe. Foreign tourists feel safe and at home in this culturally diverse and inclusive city, full of warm and friendly people.
